The Splendor of Future As A Metaphor: Collective Awakening and the Revival of The Ummah in Iqbal’s" Tolu-E-Islam

Abstract

The poetry of Muhammad Iqbal occupies a central place in modern Urdu literature due to its profound intellectual, spiritual, and socio-political dimensions. His poem “TOLU-E-ISLAM” (The Rise of Islam) presents a comprehensive vision of decline and revival within the Muslim world. This paper examines the concept of the “Splendor of Future” as a central metaphor in the poem, arguing that it signifies not merely hope for the future but a conscious, ethical, and collective struggle grounded in self-awareness and action. By analyzing the thematic structure, symbolic language, and ideological underpinnings of the poem, the study demonstrates that Iqbal envisions revival (ihya) as a multidimensional process involving intellectual renewal, moral reconstruction, and social unity. The paper further explores the contemporary relevance of this metaphor, suggesting that it offers a viable framework for addressing current crises of identity, fragmentation, and moral decline in Muslim societies. The study contributes to Iqbal scholarship by foregrounding a metaphor that integrates his philosophy of selfhood with his vision of collective awakening.
